Age-constrained therapsid tracks from a mid-latitude upland (Permian–Triassic transition, Los Menucos Complex, Argentina)

The Los Menucos Complex (North Patagonian Massif, Río Negro province, Argentina) has been long regarded as Late Triassic in age. A Dicynodontipus-dominated record is historically known from this complex and particularly the Puesto Tscherig locality. Here we report Vera site, where a new track-bearing horizon was discovered within 73-m-thick volcano-sedimentary succession. Footprints site are morphologically similar to those resemble footprints classically referred ichnogenus Dicynodontipus, thus assigned material Dicynodontipus isp. ichnological age constrained time interval between Changhsingian (Lopingian, Permian) Olenekian (Early Triassic), on basis of recently obtained U–Pb radiometric datings two ignimbrites, respectively at base top stratigraphic section. Interestingly, older than previously supposed. inherent chronostratigraphy consistent with temporal occurrence ichnotaxon, which date global distribution spanning Wuchiapingian northern Italy early Middle Germany. Taking into account most recent well previous literature about geology paleontology Menucos, age-constrained finding turns out encompass Permian–Triassic transition mirror tetrapod fauna dwelling mid-latitude, highland paleoenvironment southwestern Gondwana.
